Tο Ιnternational Hellenic Association (μη κερδοσκοπικός, μη κυβερνητικός, μη κομματικός οργανισμός με 4.000 περίπου μέλη ακαδημαϊκού επιπέδου με έδρα το Delaware των Η.Π.Α.) απέστειλε επείγουσες επιστολές – εκκλήσεις τόσο προς την Ελληνική και την Κυπριακή κυβέρνηση, όσο και προς στελέχη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, προκειμένου να εμποδιστεί η προγραμματισμένη, άμεση φίμωση της Ελληνικής φωνής του Euronews. Τα σχετικά κείμενα που απέστειλε το ΙΗΑ, σε Ελληνική και Αγγλική γλώσσα, με ημερομηνία 18 Οκτωβρίου 2021, έχουν ως εξής.
Στην Ελληνική γλώσσα με τίτλο Η Ελληνική και Κυπριακή κυβέρνηση οφείλουν να πιέσουν αποτελεσματικά ώστε να διατηρηθεί η Ελληνική Υπηρεσία του EuroNews (απεστάλη στην Ελληνική και Κυπριακή κυβέρνηση, Έλληνες και Κύπριους ευρωβουλευτές καθώς και στον Υφυπουργό παρά τω Πρωθυπουργώ και Κυβερνητικό εκπρόσωπο κ. Γιάννη Οικονόμου / Γενική Γραμματεία Ενημέρωσης και Επικοινωνίας και το Γραφείο Τύπου και Πληροφοριών (ΓΤΠ) στην Κύπρο):
«Όπως γνωρίζετε, το 2012, με πρωτοβουλία της τότε Κυπριακής προεδρίας δημιουργήθηκε η Ελληνική υπηρεσία του οργανισμού Euronews. Στα μέσα Ιουλίου 2021, η Ελληνική υπηρεσία του Euronews ενημερώθηκε προφορικά πως θα κλείσει από τις 15/12/21, μετά από συμφωνία της διοίκησης του Euronews και της Commission, η οποία θα αποσύρει την επιδότηση για την Ελληνική υπηρεσία.
H διοίκηση του Euronews επικαλείται δικαιολογίες, όπως τη χαμηλή διάχυση της ελληνικής γλώσσας, αγνοώντας την πολιτιστική της αξία, καθώς μιλήθηκε από τον αρχαιότερο πολιτισμό της Ευρώπης και συνεχίζει να ομιλείται για χιλιετίες. Αγνοεί ότι ο Ευρωπαϊκός πολιτισμός βασίζεται σε θεσμούς που ιδρύθηκαν σε αυτήν ακριβώς τη γλώσσα ενώ και η ονομασία του Euronews προέρχεται από δυο ελληνικές λέξεις. Παραβλέπει τη σημασία της γλώσσας αυτής όχι μόνο για την Ελλάδα και την Κύπρο αλλά και για την ομογένεια σε όλο τον κόσμο, ένα κοινό που ξεπερνά τα 15 εκατομμύρια. Δεδομένου ότι οι ‘Έλληνες και οι Κύπριοι αποτελούν σημαντικό μέρος του ευρωπαϊκού κοινού και όχι αμελητέα μειοψηφία, αυτή η απόφαση, επηρεάζει τη θέση της ελληνικής γλώσσας στην Ευρώπη καθώς και αντίκειται στην αρχή του πλουραλισμού των γλωσσών, που ενστερνίζεται και προωθεί η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση.
Το κλείσιμο της Ελληνικής Υπηρεσίας του Euronews αποτελεί επίσης πλήγμα για την πολυφωνία των ΜΜΕ, θεμελιώδη πυλώνα της Δημοκρατίας που αποτελεί το επίκεντρο της έγκαιρης και έγκυρης ενημέρωσης. Η απόφαση αυτή σηματοδοτεί τη μοναδική περίπτωση έως σήμερα, που αναστέλλεται η λειτουργία Υπηρεσίας σε μια επίσημη γλώσσα της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης η οποία μάλιστα είναι επίσημη γλώσσα δύο κρατών-μελών της ΕΕ – την ίδια ώρα που θα συνεχίσει να λειτουργεί κανονικά το πρόγραμμα στην τουρκική γλώσσα, ενός κράτους μη-μέλους της ΕΕ.
Σημειώνεται ότι παρόλο που το Euronews έχει ιδιωτικοποιηθεί σε μεγάλο βαθμό, η Commission συνεχίζει να χρηματοδοτεί τον οργανισμό. Για το 2022 έχει προγραμματιστεί η χρηματοδότηση με 16 εκατομμύρια Ευρώ. Το κόστος λειτουργίας της Ελληνικής υπηρεσίας υπολογίζεται στο ένα δέκατο του ποσού αυτού, μόλις 1,6 εκ. Ευρώ ετησίως και όμως έχει προγραμματιστεί η διακοπή του.
Το International Hellenic Organization, ένας μη κερδοσκοπικός, μη κυβερνητικός και μη κομματικός οργανισμός, με 4.000 περίπου μέλη Ακαδημαϊκού επιπέδου σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο, απευθύνει έκκληση προς τις κυβερνήσεις Ελλάδας και Κύπρου για να παρέμβουν προς την Επιτροπή της ΕΕ, με μοχλό την χρηματοδότηση που έμμεσα παρέχουν και αυτές σαν κράτη-μέλη της ΕΕ προς το Euronews, ώστε να διασφαλιστεί η απρόσκοπτη συνέχιση του ελληνικού προγράμματος του Euronews».
Στην Αγγλική γλώσσα με τίτλο The Greek Service of EuroNews must remain open (απεστάλη προς Dr. Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Mr. Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Internal Market, Mr. Michael Peters, Chief Executive Officer of Euronews SA με κοινοποίηση προς Mr. Naguib Sawiris, Media Globe Networks, Mr. Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission και Mrs. Stella Kyriakides, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety):
Dear Dr. von der Leyen, Mr. Breton, and Mr. Peters,
We are the International Hellenic Association*, a non-profit organization based in the USA, with membership consisting of Greek and philhellene academics as well as former diplomats and state officials, residing in Europe and in other parts of the world. We are writing to you in regard to the planned elimination of the Greek service of the EuroNews.
Based on the limited information that has become available, we understand that the reason for the decision to eliminate the Greek Service of EuroNews is the impending withdrawal of the funding by the European Commission; the rationale for the withdrawal is said to be that EuroNews in the Greek language is unnecessary, since Greek is not widely spoken. This development has come as a big surprise to Greeks and many other Europeans worldwide, and as a big blow to European culture, for the following reasons:
1) Greek journalists have responsibly served EuroNews since 2012, with in-depth knowledge based-, accurate and unbiased reporting. The EU commission has made a significant investment on the success of the Greek service of EuroNews. What can possibly be the reasons for this investment to be “dropped” at a time when the political events in Europe and, in particular, Greece, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean are at a most crucial point on many fronts, and will inevitably have a strong impact on the rest of Europe? The argument that news in the Greek language is —suddenly— no longer necessary due to a very small audience has no validity, particularly considering the massive exodus of Greek youth from Greece to other European countries and other parts of the world, since Greece’s economic crisis started in 2012. The Greek section of EuroNews serves millions of Greek speakers residing in Greece, Cyprus and throughout the world.
2) The European Union has declared its commitment to media pluralism —which contributes to the quality of news and constitutes a fundamental element of democratic societies— as well as tomultilingualism, multiculturalism, and equality among the Member States. EuroNews also prides itself for its “multicultural and multilingual newsroom”. By dropping the Greek Service of EuroNews, it appears that the European Commission and the management of EuroNews renounce these values.
3) It is unreasonable and ironic for Europe’s leading news channel to broadcast news in many languages, excluding the language of the country that produced the civilization on the principles of which European civilization has been built. It is unreasonable and ironic for the European Commission and the EuroNews to exclude a language that has significantly influenced many European languages, and from which the names of both Europe and EuroNews have been adopted (Europe = Εὐρώπη, from εὐρεία + (probably) ὤψ = she who has wide eyes/view; EuroNews = νέα της Ευρώπης).
It is our hope that considering the above, as well as the fact that Greek taxpayers also contribute to the funding of EuroNews, the European Commission and the management of EuroNews will not silence broadcasting in Greek, an official EU language and the official language of two EU member countries, Greece and Cyprus. All EU citizens should have the opportunity to be informed of European affairs in their mother tongue. The entire membership of IHA, all Greek-speaking people and countless supporters in the European Union are waiting for a positive outcome, with the Greek language remaining alive on EuroNews.
